Travel from Abroad

London has a lot of different airports. All have good train or bus links to get into London. (Nota previa: irei traduzir esta secção para português, mas nesta altura do campeonato o meu inglês e coisa para ser mais percetível que o português!)

We would personally recommend you fly to Gatwick, as we usually find it easier and quicker to travel to the area of London where our wedding venue is. Below you can find a brief description of the main airports in London.

Gatwick – This is the easiest to get to where the wedding venue is. Once you have finally managed to go through passport control (full of brexiteers!) you can simply take a train directly from the station inside the airport to London Bridge.

If you have a contactless card, you don’t even need to buy a ticket - you can just touch in by the gate and touch out once you get to the barriers in London Bridge. The ticket price is around £10 and takes around 30 mins. Please don’t take the Gatwick Express, as it is much more expensive and only saves you 2 or 3 minutes (and for this one you actually need to buy a ticket too!). This airport is well served by EasyJet.

Heathrow - From this airport you can travel into the city centre via the tube. It will take you around 1 hour 30 min to get to Canada Water. This is a good alternative to Gatwick, but the airport is not served by low-cost airlines.

Stansted - This one is a bit further from the city but is well served by low-cost airlines. To travel to the city centre you can take a train from the airport to Liverpool Street train station. The price for a return ticket is around £30, but you can usually get it for cheaper if you buy it well in advance (link). You can also take a bus (we usually use this website to book buses from airports) that can either take you to the centre, or nearby a tube station.

Luton - Pretty much the same as the above, but the airport does not actually have a train station. To get to the train station you need to take a bus from the airport. Alternatively, you can also take a bus directly from the airport to the city centre (link). If someone is planning on flying to this airport, please get in touch and we can provide you more details.

City Airport – This airport is quite well located and is within the city. It takes you around 30 minutes to get to Canada Water. Why are we not recommending this airport? First there are no direct flights from Lisbon to this airport and flights tend be a bit more expensive for this airport!

What are the current travel and COVID restrictions, and what do I need to do once I get to the UK?

There are no planned travel restrictions to travel to the UK at the time of the wedding. The government has announced that it will not be requiring tests to get in the country from mid-February onwards for vaccinated travellers and there is no quarantine required either. Please note that these rules are subject to change, so please check the Government Guidance in the weeks before the wedding and get in touch with us if you have any questions.
